Safephaseout.org is a organization that has come together to support the efforts of the fire protection industry, fire professionals, educators, community activists, burn centers, doctors and scientists to to ensure that the phase-out of fire safety products such as deca-BDE is conducted in a efficient and responsible manner. We are also working to encourage and promote a new generation of fire retardant products that are safe, effective and environmentally friendly. However to be successful, our efforts must have broad support from the key stakeholders in this debate. Organizations such as yours are important to make sure that strong fire safety regulations that save lives remain intact. That is why we are asking for your support in our efforts to communicate the need for strong fire safety standards to legislators and regulators around the U.S.
We believe the recent EPA agreement to phase out deca-BDE sets forth a rational, effective transition to newer alternatives, while allowing critical services such as police, fire and airlines to continue to use existing fire safety products that are critically important to saving lives.
In the coming months, we must remain watchful of dangerous state legislation that would preemptively ban existing products, leaving communities without adequate fire safety protection. We believe that the timeline that has been worked out with the EPA is the most appropriate. It is critical that we trust the scientists of the federal environmental agencies and not act precipitously to put our families and children at risk of serious injury or death. An effective national solution to this critical issue is the only solution that is truly safe.
